Why Sophie Really Got Her Ears Pierced

When the girls and I were in NY on our girls week, I took them to the Buffalo Science Center for a fun afternoon. When we left, I asked the girls what they wanted to do next and Sophie piped up that we should go out to dinner. I said sure and headed towards the local mall, since it was the closest place that had multiple places to eat.

The reason we need multiple places to eat is that Bella is extremely picky about what she eats – and she will not eat fast food. Unless they are McDonald’s chicken nuggets and then I have to remove the breading before she drowns them in ketchup.  So in an unfamiliar area, usually a mall can be a good choice.

Except this mall had the smallest food court I’ve ever seen – and didn’t have one place Bella would eat at. Sigh.

As we were wandering the mall we saw the movie theater that was attached (and my girls have never seen a theater attached to a mall before so they thought it was the coolest thing ever!) and we decided to go see Inside Out.

Inside Out Movie

Side note: amazing movie. just amazing.

After purchasing tickets to the movie we went to the concession stand and found a full menu with hotdogs, fries and cheeseburgers! We ended up eating a full dinner at the theater, instead of filling up on popcorn and snacks. We had a great time at the movie, walked back to the car and just as I was rooting in my bag for the car keys, I saw them. On the front seat of the car. LOCKED in.

What’s a mom to do? I called AAA, who told me it would be 90 minutes before someone could get to us. The girls and I went back into the mall and decided to tour the bottom level. We got 4 feet and Sophie spied a Claire’s….and announced she was ready to get her ears pierced.

What?!

She’s been thinking about this for almost a year, and she got Isabelle’s pierced when we were in NYC so I knew it was coming. We told her it was her decision and when she was ready she could have them done. So of course she would choose to do them now.

I figured we had 90 minutes to kill, so why not? She sat in the chair, picked out her earrings, and I signed a bazillion forms. The attendant loaded the piercing gun and did Sophie’s right ear first. And Sophie cried because it hurt.

And then Bella wigged out because Sophie was crying.

Sophie didn’t want her left ear done, and while I was telling her it HAD to be done because she was not going around with only one earring and trying to get Bella to stop screaming about Sophie my cell phone rang.

It was the tow truck driver who was at my car in the parking lot waiting for me. I told him we’d get there as soon as we could, told the attendant to do the other ear NOW and we ran out of the store towards the van.

Sophie stopped crying as soon as she saw the earrings in her ears.

Bella continued to sob the entire way back to the lake house because looking at Sophie’s ears made her ears hurt.

The tow truck driver was gracious and took 19 seconds to open the van door. It had only been 27 minutes since I had called AAA….and it was probably the only time I’d wish that they had taken longer to arrive!

Hence, the only reason Sophie got her ears pierced is because I locked the keys in the van.

Huh.
